What does it mean to be a Christian? (a metaphor)

If you were asked to describe what is means to be a Christian what would you say? hmmm... How deep or simple do we go with our explanation? How much time do we take it get to the bottom line? How much theology - how much grace - how much truth... oh man... this can get complicated or just overwhelming...

This came to mind today...
Becoming a Christian is like being adopted into a family... you go from being an orphan to being a full family member. You have full rights and full responsibilities as a full family member in God's family. Like every family, family life is complicated. Some family member take the family for granted, some respect the family well and balance things pretty well. As a newer family member it takes a while to learn the "ins and outs" of how the family functions. There is much grace in this family, you know you are always loved and welcomed. However, there is a responsibility to grow up, learn the responsibilities, and enjoy the benefits of maturity.
